The development of selective optical receptors for the detection of environmentally and biologically important metals has received much attention. Rhodamine exerts excellent photophysical properties such as long absorption and emission wavelengths, high molar extinction coefficient values and high emission quantum yield. Rhodamine is an optical colorimetric sensing probe suitable for the d-block metal cations. We report here a new rhodamine-based colorimetric/fluorometric sensing probe for the selective detection of metal cation. A rhodamine derivative with thiophene substituent has been prepared and characterized by IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectra. Its metal cation sensing ability has been investigated based on the absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. Especially, absorption of rhodamine derivative with thiophene substituent increase selectively with the presence of Fe3+ cation.
