Due to its excellent thermal/electrical conductivity, great chemical stability, and high surface area, graphene has been known as catalyst support with remarkable performance. Therefore, there has been many attempts to prepare graphene-based composites as catalytic materials in order to exploit specific advantages of graphene. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based composites with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized and used as catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2). The AuNPs/rGO composites were prepared through conjunction of positively charged AuNPs and negatively charged rGO nanosheets. The as-prepared nanocomposites were investigated using various methods including transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and UV-vis spectroscopy. AuNPs/rGO nanocomposites showed greatly improved resistance against oxidation and aggregation, and also AuNPs/rGO-modified electrodes displayed excellent catalytic activity towards the electrochemical reduction of CO2, due to the high specific surface of rGO and great catalytic effect of AuNPs.
