Magnetic nanoparticles with different size and coatings have attracted extensive interest in the recent years to address the current medical challenges such as drug delivery, cancer therapy and as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, Polyacrylic acid (PAA) have been used as coating ligand for lanthanide oxide nanoparticles as excellent biocompatibility is major for biomedical application. Highly disperse and ultrasmall lanthanide oxide (Ln2O3, Ln = Dy, Ho and Tb) nanocolloids were synthesized and their water proton relaxivity were studied to address their possibility as T2-contrast agent in imaging. The in vivo MR images were recorded for Holmium and Terbium nanoparticles which shows the negative contrast enhancement on liver and kidney after 15 minutes of injection. The Terbium nanoparticle also exhibit green fluorescence at λex = 544nm. Hence it can be inferred that ultrasmall Tb2O3 nanoparticles can be used as T2-FI imaging agent.
