In this study, we prepared and investigated the cell viability, optical and relaxometric properties of amorphous carbon nanoparticles. Amorphous carbon nanoparticles were prepared with a facile one step synthesis by reducing dextrose with sodium hydroxide in an aqueous medium. The nanoparticles are well- dispersed in distilled water and ultrasmall in particle diameter. The average particle diameter is 2.2 nm. Under the irradiation of ultraviolet (UV)- visible absorption (λabs) at 267 nm and emission (λem) at 453 nm, the carbon nanoparticles show sky-blue in color. The amorphous carbon nanoparticles exhibited no cellular toxicity up to 500 μM of carbon concentration and and exhibited small r1 and r2 water proton relaxivities of 0.036 and 0.068 s−1mM−1, respectively.
