Self-assembly of small molecules have been studied for fabricating nanostructures as bottom-up synthesis. For understanding the change of molecular structure to the assembled structure, fluorenyl-methyl carbamate (Fmoc) contained amino acid gelator (Fmoc-AA) was modified with hydrazide, which reacts with aldehyde to make hydrazone. The resulting hydrazone-incorporated Fmoc-AA was controlled the molecules` symmetry (C2 for bis, C3 for tris) and their assembly was observed by SEM images and CD spectra. The intermolecular interactions in the fibril-like assembled structure were composed of π-π interactions between the Fmoc group and core benzene, and hydrogen bonding between acyl hydrazone and amide bonds. Additionally, the alignment of hydrazone linkage might be affected to the resulting assembled structure of bis and tris including the CD signals. Through this study, the hydrazone linkage can support not only making functional motif but also mainly involving the interactions to make assembly.
