Melanin is a biopigment found in organisms, whose formation is biologically termed as melanogenesis. Melanogenesis is a pathway that involves oxidation of tyrosine. It is known that molecules similar to tyrosine, such as catecholamines can form melanin-like-particle through oxidative pathway. Amyloid fibrils, which can be formed by misfolding of protein, are known for its association with diverse diseases. Recently, chemical functionalities pertaining to amyloid fibrils are recruiting interest. Previous studies found that amyloid structures generated from a protein (Pmel17) play an important role in melanogenesis. In this paper, we show the effects of amyloid fibrils on oxidative assembly of catechol derivatives.
