Novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) molybdenum oxyfluoride compounds have been successfully synthesized via hydrothermal reactions using concentrated hydrofluoric acid. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the title compounds crystallize in the polar orthorhombic space group, Pca21. The molecular structures of the reported materials are composed of MoO2F42- distorted octahedra and divalent metal cations. Since the compounds have a net polarization originating from the alignment of MoO2F4 octahedra, second harmonic generation (SHG) signals with moderate efficiencies are observed. Furthermore, the compounds exhibit orange-red phosphorescence under UV light attributed to the ligand to metal charge transfer in MoO2F42- groups. Other characterizations such as spectroscopic and thermal analysis are also presented.
