Pd is a rare transition metal having good catalytic activity, can be applied for hydrogen storage systems, chemical sensors, and the catalysis for direct formic acid fuel cell1,2. Synthesis and characterizing Pd nanoparticles still attract researchers’ interest to date for broader and deeper understanding of intriguing properties at nanoscale of the metal2. Besides, the development of single-entity electrochemistry (SEE) has led to a very recent application direction of synthesizing metal nanoparticles which is also called nanodroplet-mediated electrodeposit3,4,5. This research is to synthesize Pd nanoparticles applying the novel method and using water-in-oil emulsion droplets, which contain Pd2+ precursor and act as electrodeposit mediators on a biased working UME at a constant potential. The size range of the formed Pd nanoparticles is about several tens of nm, and the catalytic activity of the Pd nanoparticles for HCOOH oxidation was investigated. The new electrochemical synthesizing method promises a simple, fast, effective and non-expensive way could be applied for other catalytic nanoparticles for example Pd alloy materials, etc.
