Although ammonia gas is one of irreplaceable chemicals in industrial areas as a feedstock, it is very dangerous and toxic to human health when exposed even at a low level of concentrations. Recently, removal of the gas has become more important due to formation of secondary dust from ammonia that affects the eco-system. For its effective removal, we prepared phloroglucinol-based porous organic adsorbents and modified them to sulfonated frameworks which can strongly adsorb ammonia. Finally, hydrophobic alkyl chains were incorporated into the sulfonated adsorbents to increase the hydrophobicity. The properties of compounds were characterized by various techniques including infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 13C Solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, and gas sorption.
