In this work, a melamine functionalized tungsten disulfide nanosheets (N-WS2) were fabricated and used as fillers to form epoxy EP/N-WS2 nanocomposites. The effects of WS2 and N-WS2 loadings on the mechanical properties of epoxy composites were investigated and compared. With only addition of 0.18 wt.% N-WS2, the fracture toughness (KIC) and fracture energy (GIC) of EP/N-WS2 nanocomposites showed 55% and 102% improvement over the neat epoxy. Interestingly, the flexural modulus and strength of EP composites was also increased with the introduction of N-WS2 fillers. These properties could result from the good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion of N-WS2 fillers and the EP matrix. Therefore, this work provides a facile way to produce of high-performance EP nanocomposites.
