Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is one of the most promising candidate for next-generation electrochemical energy storage device due to its high theoretical energy density, environmental benignity and low cost of sulfur. However, the practical application of Li-S battery is still hindered by the severe dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and low electrical conductivity of sulfur. In this work, we synthesized iron oxide nanoparticle/carbon nanotube nanocomposite via a facile refluxing and heating process. The iron oxide nanoparticles act as (1) the nodes in carbon nanotube for alleviating the aggregation of sulfur and the diffusion of LiPSs, and (2) the active sites on the surface of carbon nanotube for trapping LiPSs with strong chemical affinity during cycling. As a result, the nanocomposite exhibits a high rate capability (340 mA h g-1 at 7 C-rate) and stable long-term cycling performance (545 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 C-rate).
