Polymer brush is a surface coating consisting of polymer chains tethered to the surface. It is typically synthesized by “grafting-from” and “grafting-to” methods. “Grafting-to” method provides complete understanding of resulting systems because grafted polymer chain can be pre-defined and well-characterized before immobilizing on the surface. However, due to slow reaction kinetics, efficient grafting chemistry that can cover a range of substrates is required to expand the applicability of “grafting-to” method. We investigaed a Cu(0)-catalyzed azide-alkyne ring addition (CuAAC) click reaction for the purpose. As reactive surfaces, alkyne-incoporated silane and crosslinked polymer thin films were first synthesized. Azide-terminnated polymers were separately synthesized with atom transfer radical polymerization and subsequent end group modification. The polymer brushes were effectively synthesized from the two components, and analyzed with thin film characterization tools. Our results highlight the importance of surface engineering to successfully fabricate polymer brushes.
