Polyethylene (PE) is the most popular plastic in the world. Because heteroatoms are absent, PE is chemically inert but difficult to functionalize. Direct copolymerization and post-polymerization modification have been explored for the synthesis of Functional PE, but resulted in only a limited success. Here, we suggest a different route to functional PE block polymers by post-polymerization deoxygenation. By taking polystyrene-block-poly(vinyl acetate) (PS-b-PVAc) prepared which was polymerizied by RAFT polymerization as an example, we demonstrate synthesis of PS-b-PE with controlled degree of functionalization in the PE segment.
