Rational design and preparation of multi-metallic hollow nanostructures (HNSs) have been great attention due to their structural and compositional advantages toward fuel redox reactions. A successful one-pot synthesis of Pd-Pt-Ag ternary alloy HNSs with controllable size and hollowness through a self-templating approach without any pre-synthesized templates is reported. By simply tuning the concentration of surfactants, the complicated multiple metal reduction kinetics are readily ordered, results in controlled architectures of final Pd-Pt-Ag HNSs. Time-resolved transmission electron microscopy identified that initially formed metastable Pd-Ag nanocrystals are employed as self-templates and provide hollow cavities via galvanic replacement with Pt precursors. Owing to large active surface area and ternary elemental composition, the prepared Pd-Pt-Ag HNSs exhibits improved catalytic performances for ethanol electro-oxidation reaction.
