Physical hydrogels prepared by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between tannic acid (TA) and polymers such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) in aqueous solution have been spotlighted due to their biocompatibility and adhesive properties suitable for drug delivery and hemostatic applications. Although the 3-dimensionally interconnected supramolecular network structure provides modulus to the gel, the polymer/TA mixture is typically liquid-like and needs to be further strengthened for applications such as biomedical adhesive. Here, we present about a hydrogel prepared by TA-mediated aggregation of amphiphilic and biocompatible block copolymer micelles in aqueous solution. Bridging the micellar core by hydrogen bonding between TA and the corona segment significantly improves the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Structure-property relationship between the self-assembled morphology and the mechanical/adhesive properties will be discussed in detail.
