Using Yb, Ho-codoped layered yttrium hydroxide (LYH) as a sacrificial precursor, YVO4:Yb,Ho nanoparticles, well known up-converting probe particles for biomedical applications, were prepared in an aqueous solution at room temperature; the reaction between LYH:Yb,Ho and VO3- led to rapid formation of YVO4:Yb,Ho with quite regular size and spindle-like morphology at room temperature. As remnant hydroxyl groups on the surface of YVO4:Yb,Ho nanoparticles increase the probability of non-radiative relaxation, high temperature treatment (< 500 ℃) was required for efficient up-conversion under 980 nm NIR irradiation. Transparent inorganic/polymer hybrid composite films were then fabricated for heat-screening and up-conversion by dispersing obtained YVO4:Yb,Ho nanoparticles into aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions and casting these mixture colloids into Petri dishes. The correlation between transparency, NIR absorption degree, and up-conversion luminescence efficiency was investigated using prepared powders, colloids, and composite films in this work.
