Electrochemical water splitting is a promising and appealing solution for the clean and renewable energy conversion of water to fuel. In the water splitting , the oxidative reaction of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is kinetically slow and requires large over-potentials. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a class of hydrotalcite-like inorganic layered materials made up of positively charged brucite-like host layers and charge balancing anions are incorporated inside the interlayer spaces. LDH has drawn significant attention owing to its large specific surface area, and facilitated electron transport properties towards electrocatalysis. Among various types of LDH materials reported in the literature, cobalt containing materials have been demonstrated as competent OER catalysts. In this work, α-Co(OH)2 LDH has been prepared by solvothermal methods. Phase transformation of α-Co(OH)2 into various cobalt structures (β-Co(OH)2 , β-CoOOH, γ-CoOOH) have been fully investigated. The α-Co(OH)2 was stripped into a single layer by anion exchange. The single layer of α-Co(OH)2 showed enhanced OER activity compared bulk α-Co(OH)2.
