Amorphous metal–ligand networks respond to external stimuli by changing their mechanical properties. To gain fine control over the solid-to-fluid phase transition of metallogels, we have introduced intentional structural mismatches into otherwise tightly-knit cross junctions. Built upon biphenolate/tetraoximate-derived polydentate ligands, these soft materials display markedly different rheological properties depending on the level of “ligand doping”, as well as the type of metal ions serving as key structural supports. Taking this proof-of-concept first-generation system to the next level, we have devised and implemented an anion-selective detection scheme that is triggered by covalent modification of the “masked” ligand, and amplified by the fluid-to-solid transition of the bulk material as a digitized sensory response. In this presentation will be discussed the advent of this chemistry, its current progress, and future directions.
