Recently, N-heterocyclic cations received considerable attention in various fields of study as dyes and pharmaceutical area. Herein, new Rh(III)-catalyzed N-annulation reaction using secondary allylamines and internal alkynes has been developed for the preparation of pyridinium salts. Various substituted pyridinium salts were obtained using secondary allylamine, internal alkyne and anion source in the presence of Rh(III)/Cu(II) complex. Interestingly, the resulting pyridinium salts displayed strong fluorescent spectra over the full color region. Moreover, the protocol was applied to the surface modification of SBA-15 to prepare fluorescent pyridinium salt-impregnated silica which can be utilized for the detection of nitrobenzene in a recyclable manner.
