Noble metal nanostructures have attracted much attention because of their unique optical, catalytic, sensing, and electronic properties. We have synthesized single-crystalline Au nanostructures in vapor phase without catalysts or surfactants. The ultraflat, ultraclean, and single-crystalline nanostructures, including Au nanoparticles, Au nanowire, Au nanobelts, and Au nanoplates, are stereoepitaxially grown on a substrate with a specific orientation. Moreover, the nanostructures can be selectively synthesized by experimental conditions and locations of the substrate. As-synthesized Au nanostructures have superb characteristics that positively distinguish themselves from other nanomaterials; i) mechanical properties of superelasticity and superstrength, ii) well-defined geometry with atomically flat Au (111) surfaces, iii) thin diameter, iv) high biocompatibility, v) excellent electrical conductivity. These exceptional properties would make Au nanostructures potentially be a promising nanobio sensing tool, stimulating us to employ Au nanostructures for the detection of a wide-range of biological species.
