Worldwide space agencies including NASA and ESA have the plan to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon in the near future. For sustainable long-term human exploration, the construction of habitats and infrastructure on the lunar surface is required to protect humans and equipment from harsh environmental conditions like space radiation, meteorite, dust, and so on. In consideration of the high transportation costs from the earth to the Moon, In-situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) technology is receiving increasing attention in space exploration. In this respect, lunar regolith, a fine powdery soil that covers the surface on the Moon, can be a suitable candidate as a construction material and the solidification process of lunar regolith is required for manufacturing building elements such as bricks. In this study, microwave sintering of lunar regolith simulant (KLS-1) at 2.45 GHz was performed at different temperatures. The microstructural analysis of microwave-sintered lunar regolith simulant has been conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the effect of sintering temperature on density, porosity, thermal expansion, and mechanical properties will be discussed in detail.
