The sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) is a significant proton-conducting polymer, and proton conductivity and thermomechanical properties can be easily adjusted by varying degree of sulfonation (DS). Therefore, its application to proton exchange membrane (PEM) for fuel cell is being expanded. In order to further improve the physicochemical properties of the PEM, inorganic additive, such as graphene nanofibers (GNFs), material has been studied with excellent thermal and mechanical stability, large specific surface area, high crystallinity, and excellent electronic properties. In this study, sulfonated unzipped graphene nanofibers (SO3H-UGNF) were synthesized for effective dispersion in the polymer matrix. SO3H-UGNF is applied as an inorganic potential proton conductive material embedded in the SPEEK matrix. The shape, structure, thermodynamic, physicochemical, and electrochemical properties of the SPEEK/SO3H-UGNF complex were investigated and compared with the results obtained from SPEEK. The prepared SPEEK/ SO3H-UGNF composite membrane has a uniform and dense shape and has improved physical and chemical properties such as thermal stability and tensile strength than SPEEK alone as a proton exchange membrane (PEM).
