For the next twenty years in science and engineering communities, one of the spotlights will be upon the full utilization of our ever expanding knowledge of nanoscience and nanotechnology to neighboring fields. Especially, studies on light-matter interactions in nanoscales should play a pivotal role, where semiconductor nanocrystals and metal nanoparticles are building blocks of paramount importance. Nanophotonics can overlap with biotechnology, for example, via utilizations of semiconductor nanocrystals and metal nanoparticles for biomedical imaging, biological tagging applications, and nano-medicines. We show that semiconductor quantum dot based biosensors can be applied for early cancer diagnosis. FRET-based quantum dot in vivo sensors will be introduced for biological applications. Quantum dot embedded silica microsphere will be also addressed for multiplexed biological imaging. Nobel metal nanoparticles will be discussed for potential medical applications.
