Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) are a class of ultra-small size of nanoparticles, which usually consists of several to tens of atoms, have been developed and stimulated extensive interests due to the molecular like properties such as fluorescence, high surface area, and stability. So far, Au NCs have been widely used as fluorescent probes for the detection of various metal ions with trace concentration. The interaction between metal ions and Au NCs, which capped with a negatively charged molecules, leads different fluorescent properties of Au NCs depending on the types of metal ions, and the fluorescence property of Au NCs might also be manipulated by the kinds of the capping agent. In this research, we investigated the interaction between the Glutathione capped-Au NCs and various metal ions such as Al3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Cr3+, Co2+, Hg2+, Cu2+, Fe3+ through monitoring photoluminescent features. We found that the fluorescence property of Au NCs shows four different behaviour like enhancement, equivalence, decrement, and quenching in accordance with the kinds of metal ions. In particular case, we also found that the altered fluorescence intensity of Au NCs was recovered after the addition of EDTA, which can abstract metal ion. Additionally, we will further mechanistic study for the change in the optical behaviour of Au NCs depending on metal ions.
