The methallylation and allylation reactions of carbonyl compounds are one of the best ways to form carbon-carbon bonds. In our methods, the aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes react with allylsilane under Lewis acid catalyst, COBI (Chiral oxazaborolidinium ion) catalyst to produce homoallylic alcohols. The enantiomeric pure homoallylic alcohols can be used as the chiral building block of various biomolecules. In the presence of COBI catalyst, the reaction proceeded in high yields (up to 99%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee), even without metal reagents. Silane compounds have the advantage of non-toxic, high thermal stability, and rather low sensitivity to moisture and oxygen. A number of applications of this method to various other challenging chemical intermediates and biological active compounds are possible.
