Although it has recently been recognized that global supplies of the most useful metal ores are being exhausted, Fe remains one of the five most abundant metals in the Earth’s crust. The development of Fe catalysts for the large-scale production of cyclic carbonates is a meaningful investigation. Our sustainable Fe-iminopyridine catalyst systems were investigated for the formation of cyclic carbonates or oxazolidinones from carbon dioxide and epoxides or aziridines, respectively, under mild conditions (50 °C, 3 bar CO2). The homoleptic and heteroleptic Fe catalysts were prepared by a convenient self-assembly protocol. The optimal catalyst contained a hydrogen bond donor to activate substrate ring opening and a nucleophilic imidazole group to activate the CO2 electrophile. This approach represents a green CO2 recycling method to afford value-added chemicals with potential industrial applications. A wide range of cyclic carbonates and oxazolidinones was synthesized in excellent yield and selectivity under mild conditions. Thus, this approach represents a green CO2 recycling process for producing valuable chemicals with potential industrial applications. Further investigations on carbon utilization and the recycling of carbon dioxide are underway as valuable sources of useful chemicals and eco-friendly materials.
