The low-lying LUMO energy level of the silole ring (due to σ*- π* conjugation between the σ* orbital of the silole silicon atom and the π* orbital of the butadiene moiety) makes siloles ideal candidates for use as electoluminescent materials in organic lighting emitting diodes (OLEDs). Recently, we reported that the electronic structure of silole derivatives could be effectively fine–tuned by the geometric change on the silicon. In an effort to apply the geometric effect in bithienosilole system, we synthesized new series of exo-cyclic 5,5′-bis[2-(6-trimethylsilyl)pyridyl]dithienosiloles and exo-cyclic 5,5′-bis[4-(1-phenylbenzimidazole)phenyl]dithienosiloles. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these bithienosiloles were estimated by means of UV and PL as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV). In addition, the electronic properties were studied by the device fabrication applying as an electron transporting materials.
