Gas sensing properties of SnO2/WO3 based on thick film for the detection of volatile organic compounds

In this study, a highly sensitive WO3 based thick film VOCs sensor doped with SnO2, Pd, In, Pt and Ru with various weight percents had been studied. Gas sensing materials of WO3 loaded with 1, 5, 10, 20wt% metal oxides and 0~5wt% catalysts(Pt, Pd, Ru, In) were prepared and tested for VOCs. WO3 and SnO2 nano powder were fabricated by sol-gel method and chemical precipitation. The Metal- WO3 thick films were prepared by screen-printing method. The measured sensitivity to VOCs gas is defined as the ratio (Ra/Rg) of the resistance(Rair) of WO3 film in air to the resistance(Rgas) of WO3 film in a VOCs test gas in this study. It was found that sensitivity and selectivity of the films for VOCs gas at 350℃~400℃ increased by doping with 1wt% Pd and 5wt% SnO2.
