The presentation describes the versatility of ruthenium catalysts being able to selectively produce small molecules, macrocyles, polymers, and even supramolecules via olefin metathesis reaction. Broad ranges of the molecules are prepared by various forms of olefin metathesis reactions such as cross metathesis (CM), ring-closing metathesis (RCM), ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), and the combinations of these reactions. This work demonstrates how thermodynamics of fundamentally and mechanistically one transformation (exchange of C=C bonds) can be controlled to prepare various compounds with molecular weights ranging from 100 to 2 million g/mol. This is a success story of how interdisciplinary efforts from organic, organometallic, and polymer communities have brought the new concept to chemical synthesis.
