Here we report a method of generating a nanoparticle array composed of various nanoparticles with different shapes, sizes, and composition. These arrays have been used for creation of cellular nanoenvironments and subsequent cell assays. These nanoenvironments allow for presenting various nanosized 3D features to cells of interest and for analyzing cellular phenotypes in a parallel and straightforward fashion. Using this method, we show that cells respond to different underlying nanoenvironments with different cellular phenotypes. The number and morphologies of adhered cells are comparable for nanoparticle-arrayed surface and fibronectin-arrayed surface. This nanoparticle array-based cell assay system has potential in creating cellular nanoenvironments and studying cell’s responses to various nanoenvironments in a high-throughput way.
