We have produced substrates made of close-packed and layered assembly of uniformly sized gold nano-particles. Gold nano-particles with diameters are highly uniform at 5 nm, 13 nm, 30 nm were synthesized by reducing HAuCl4 with NaBH4 and Citrate in water. The solution was treated with hexane and ethanol to destabilize the gold particles to float as a monolayer at the water surface. A silicon substrate was dipped into and out of the solution in order to transfer the gold nano-particle monolayer. Repeating the transferring the gold nano-particle monolayer. When Raman spectra of benzenethiol adsorbed at these substrates were obtained, substantial enhancements were observed. We will compare the surface enhanced Raman effects of various substrates with different particle size and number of layers.
