We have prepared type-I core-shell and core-double shell nanocrystals and studied their photoluminescence properties as a function of inorganic shell material as well as organic water-soluble surface ligand. Both CdSe/ZnS core-shell and CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS or CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-double shell nanocrystals were prepared by employing a TOPO-free synthetic method. The lattice structures of nanocrystals were studied by using a synchrotron radiation facility, the photoluminescence lifetimes were measured, and the single-dot blinking dynamics were monitored using a confocal microscopy. With CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals, the ZnS surface was passivated with three different types of water-soluble ligands; mercaptopropionic acid, mercaptopropanol, and aminoethanthiol. With water-soluble quantum dots, in addition to the photoluminescence lifetime and the single-dot blinking dynamics, we measured their hydrodynamic in aqueous solution. Our results suggest the possibilities of making highly-luminescent bio-compatible quantum dots with a thin layer of water-soluble ligands.
