Polymerization of 2-ethynyldimethylsilylthiophene was examined for various tansition metal catalyst systems. A WCl6 system was found to be a particularly effective catalyst for the polymerization of 2-ethynyldimethylsilylthiophene. NMR and IR spectra of the polyacetylenes formed support that their main chain consists of alternating double bonds. Polymerization of 2-ethynyldimethylsilylthiophene by various catalysts leaded to souble, yellow or brown colored polymers. The weight average molecular as determined by GPC relative to polystrene standards ranged form 2000 to 6600. IR spectra of these polymers show weak absorption band at 1545 cm-1, due to streching frequencies of alternating double bond. The thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) trace for the polymer heated under nitrogen atmosphere form 25℃ to 1000 ℃ showed an overall weight loss of 88%.
