New Discrete and Framework Molecular Structures Formed by Metal-Ion Directed

Metal directed procedures have been employed to produce a range of metallo-supramolecular species that incorporate metal complexes as structural elements. Dinuclear metal complex 'platforms' incorporating aryl-linked bis(β-diketonato) ligands have been synthesised. These species incorporate coordinatively unsaturated metal centres. The manner by which this latter property has been exploited to construct both new discrete and framework structures will be discussed. New examples of metallo-rings, chains, helicates and tetrahedra will be presented. The design principles involved in the construction of each structural type will be discussed in terms of the choice of metal ion and organic component(s) employed. For example, in one such study involving self-assembly techniques, the interaction of 5’’’-dimethylquaterpyridine (L) with iron(II) chloride was investigated. This resulted in the assembly of a tetranuclear tetrahedral structure of type [Fe4L6]8+ that encapsulates an anionic [FeCl4]- unit in its central cavity; the inclusion behaviour of this host with a range of other anionic guests will be presented.
