The excitation of molecular vibration provides a promising prospect for mode-selective process.  If this kind of process can be realized on the surface, it would enable us to control various surface chemical and physical processes.  Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a powerful tool not only for real-space imaging but also for inducing the mode-selective motion and reaction of individual molecules, because STM is an ideal electron source for vibrational excitations of a single molecule through the inelastic electron tunneling process.  Moreover, with the STM, one can obtain vibrational signals from individual molecules on the surface. In this talk I will present some of recent results on mode-selective control of surface dynamics and chemical reaction, and single-molecule vibrational spectroscopy using a low-temperature STM.
