Among various kinds of paper grades, newsprint is the most profitable and important product as an information media. Recent trends in the newsprint market include: high-speed twin-wire formers, intensive use of deinked fiber, lightweight newsprint grades, offset printing, and a closed white water system. Hence, paper dusts and lints are still a problem in most pressrooms. Even though beneficial effects can be achieved through mechanical adjustment at the refiner and drying and calendering sections, chemical additives are still widely used to reduce the linting propensity of paper. Thus, a 43GSM sheet was surface-sized at 0-5% add-on with both oxidized starch and rosin. To evaluate the sizing efficiency, general and optical properties of surface-sized paper, such as tensile, tear and burst strength, breaking length, folding endurance, opacity, smoothness, water and oil absorbency are measured. In order to compare the degree of dusting and linting between the surface-sized and surface-unsized paper, RI printabilty test and SEM analysis are also discussed.
