Recent demand for enantiopure chiral compounds continues to ascend, largely for use in pharmaceuticals. Also other related industries such as flavor and aroma chemicals, agricultural chemicals, and specialty materials become to require optically pure products increasingly. Lipases have been used widely as efficient catalysts for the preparation of chiral compounds through kinetic resolution of racemic mixtures, and have a considerable industrial potential. Alkyl 3-hydroxybutanoate derivatives are important building blocks in pharmaceuticals and many companies have developed efficient routes for the production of these compounds. Novel route for the synthesis of alkyl 3-hydroxybutanoate derivatives was developed using kinetic resolution of β-lactone derivatives through enzymatic alcoholysis. The details of kinetic resolution of β-lactone derivatives will be presented.
