Osmium catalyzed Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation (AD) is one of the most well established catalytic asymmetric reactions and widely used in many fields of chemical synthesis. However, the high cost of osmium/chiral ligand and low turnover, as well as the high toxicity of osmium obstructs the large-scale industrial application of the AD reaction. In this context, we designed new water-soluble interface ligands and they were applied towards truly supportless recycling of both the metal and the ligand in AD reactions for an efficient and environmentally friendly recycling method. AD of olefins using these water-soluble ligand systems employing the chemoentrapment method through the use of a chemical trapping agent, ethyl vinyl ether (EVE) proceeded in high yields exhibiting excellent asymmetric inductions comparable with those obtained from homogeneous reactions using regular ligands.
