Small-molecule chiral complexes exhibiting enzyme-like enantioselectivity are of great interest in asymmetric catalysis. In this work, new chiral Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with N,N’-Dibenzyl-(R,R)-1,2-Diaminocyclohexane ligand were synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystal structures of these complexes reveal that Zn complex in the geometry of distorted tetrahedral fashion, but the Cu one in nearly square-planar. The coordination of metals to the chiral amine ligand leads to a 5-membered metallaheterocycle of (S,S) configuration. In both cases, the original C2-symmetry of the ligand was preserved. Their asymmetric catalytic activities for nitroaldol reaction of benzaldehyde were examined.
