Chiral Lewis acids serve as useful catalysts for a wide variety of transformations, particularly for the addition reactions to aldehydes. Herein, a new chiral lewis acid of [N,N’-bis[1-(2-fluorophenyl)methyl]-(R,R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane]ZnCl2 was synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystal structure of this complex reveals that structure is distorted tetrahedron around the cental Zn metal. The coordination of the metal to the chiral amine ligand leads to a 5-membered metallaheterocyclic ring that blocks nitrogens also in distorted tetrahedral structures exhibited in (S) configuration. Catalytic asymmetric nitroaldol (Henry) reaction between benzaldehyde and nitromethane in the presence of amine base with this chiral catalyst affords (R)-(+)-1-phenyl-2-nitroethanol in 70-78% yield with 31-34% ee.
