Nanostructures composed of porphyrin derivative molecules were recently discovered and their application to important catalytic reactions such as light-assisted water splitting to make hydrogen fuel is being actively. We have investigated the nanostructures produced by adsorption of hemi-porphyrin molecules (dipyrromethene: DPM) on graphite and gold surfaces by using scanning tunneling microscope and atomic force microscope. DPM deposition on graphite leads to form very long 1-D molecular wires (a few nm in thickness) and 2-D hexagonal patterns. 1-D molecular wires are formed by π-π stacking of molecules. In addition, very large sized nano-cups are produced. On gold surface, short molecular wires are produced, where the main axis is tilted with respect to surface direction.
