We present one-pot synthesis of highly luminescent (ZnSe)ZnS, (core)shell structured quantum dots. ZnSe cores are synthesized as follows. The fast injection of Zinc precursors and tri-n-butylphosphine selenide into the mixture of coordinating surfactant and noncoordinating solvent causes their thermal decomposition and supersaturation and thus the nuclei of ZnSe spawn. The subsequent growth of the nuclei of ZnSe completes the core. To enhance the photoluminescence and stability of ZnSe quantum dots, we overcoat ZnSe cores with ZnS shells through a subsequent injection of S precursors into the same solution with no purification. Synthesized quantum dots are characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Through the moderate control of the reaction conditions (reaction temperature, concentration, and reactivity of precursors), we produce highly luminescent (ZnSe)ZnS quantum dots in the desirable wavelength range.
