Cyclam-based transition metal complexes immobilized onto mesoporous silica as redox catalysts

N-functionalized cyclam macrocyclic ligands have been immobilized onto mesoporous silica with various mesostructure phases such as hexagonal p6mm, cubic Ia3d, and cubic Im3m. The mesoporous silicas with in-build chloropropyl functional group were synthesized directly by applying microwave synthesis approach and the cyclam ligands were tethered via the surface substitution reactions. The tethered cyclam ligands proven to be facile accommodate transition metal cations into their cavity. The Co(cyclam) functionalized mesoporous silicas showed good catalytic activity in the oxidation of cyclo-olefins to give their the corresponding allylic hydroperoxides, which exceeded 50% after a 12 h reaction time. The N-functionalization of cyclam ligand with carboxylic and pyridine groups was observed to improve the catalytic activity and the catalysts stability. Investigation was also done to utilize the in-situ generated peroxocarbonate complex as oxygen-transfer agents to oxidize more stable olefins in one pot system with oxygen and carbon dioxide.
