Organic electrochromic materials (OEC) have received much attention due to their potential application to display devices. As a new OEC material, we have recently designed and synthesized BMPM [2-(bis-N-methylpyridinium-4-yl-methylene)-malononitrile dihexafluorophosphate. This material is similar to methyl viologen (MV), but can be more easily reduced than viologen due to its additional electron withdrawing group, malononitrile. In this study, we have attached two ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) moieties to this molecule and attempted electropolymerization to obtain an electrochromic film on an ITO electrode. Having this electrochromic film, we have studied its electrochromic behaviour and compared to that of PEDOT-Viologen film.
