Silver nanorod is readily synthesized and its physical properties have been characterized. Since it is well-known that silver exhibits antibacterial activity, materials made of silver or silver composite have caused the great attention in pharmaceutical and medical fields as well as material science. We report here the study of the antibacterial effect induced by silver nanorod against E.coli. Dose-dependent growth inhibition of E.coli in the culture medium was observed in the presence of silver rod. Next, we investigated the antibacterial action of silver nanorod. Effect of direct silver surface contact was separated from effect of silver ions by encaging silver rod. The result provides us the conclusion that silver ions released from silver rod is mostly, if not all, responsible for antibacterial effect.
