Chemical and electrochemical modification of silicon surfaces with organic layers had much attention in the past decade because SiO2 as an insulating material reaches its physical boundaries in CMOS technology. Another alternative application field of the organic layers is to use for sensing purposes. Recently, silicon-based biochips or biosensors are very active research areas because their performance is highly sensitive and their preparation is compatible with well-established microfabrication techniques. Nevertheless, there are many needs for new process to modify biologically active organic layers on H-terminated silicon surfaces under mild condition. In this presentation, we report electrochemical approaches to prepare silicon-based biochip surfaces and their applications for micro-patterning of biomolecules.
