We created microarrayed nanoparticle surfaces and used them as cell assay platforms to investigate how these various nanoenvironments, composed of metallic nanoparticles with different shape, size, compositon, and modification, affect the outcomes of cell assays. Using this approach, we show that nanoparticle-based nanoenvironments induce better and more distinctive cell assay results in cell adhesion, viability, proliferation, and transfection assays and F-actin formation than flat glass surface without nanofeatures and cells respond differently to different underlying nanoparticle nanoenvironments. These findings underscore the importance and need for creating and studying cellular nanoenviroments for cell assays and tissue and cell engineering. This arrayed nanoparticle-based method would allow the straightforward and massive creation of numerous cellular nanoenvironments in a combinatorial, high-throughput way on a single chip for parallel analysis of cell assay results.
