There has recently been a considerable amount of interest in two-photon absorption (TPA) chromophores because of their applications to 3-D optical data storage and bio-imaging, up-converted lasing, and optical power limiting. The presented study involves the synthesis and characterization of TPA dyes with tri-branched structure. We have investigated the effect of different substitution schemes of donors and acceptors at the terminals of the branched structure on the TPA cross-sections of the compounds. The compounds are built around a triphenylamine core; the donor and acceptor involved are [4-(2-(4-Bromophenyl)-vinyl)-phenyl]diphenylamine and 4-[2-(4-(2-ethylhexylsulfonyl) phenyl)-(1E)-vinyl]benzene-(1E)-2-vinyl, respectively. All the compounds were synthesized by Heck Coupling reaction and their one photon and two photon properties were characterized. We have tried to rationalize the observed TPA cross-sections of the resulting compounds with the various effects arising due to the difference in substitution schemes.
