Fabrication of the graphitic HCMS carbon nitride capsules by condensation of cyanamide (CN-NH2) as molecular precursor using SCMS (solid core mesoporous shell) silica particles as a template is described. Nitrogen adsorption, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used for the characterization. The carbon nitride structure revealed high graphitic nature with C3N4 stoichiometry, which indicates sp2 bonding in conjugated doubly bonded heterocyclic network. The graphitic C3N4 structure was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, energy dispersive X-ray and elemental analysis. The graphitic HCMS carbon nitride capsules were used as support for Pt50-Ru50 alloy catalyst to study the supporting effect on the anodic performance in direct methanol fuel cell. Results show that the specific activity of the Pt-Ru catalyst supported on the graphitic C3N4 structure is higher than that of commercial Pt-Ru catalyst form E-TEK.
