Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been the focus of recent research interests because of their diverse potential applications as new materials. We have designed and prepared microporous MOFs by various synthetic strategies. The MOFs exhibit high thermal stabilities, selective guest binding properties, and remarkable gas sorption capabilities that can be applied in gas storage and separation. In particular, redox-active MOFs produce mono-dispersed and small (<5 nm) gold, silver, and palladium nanoparticles just on immersion of the MOF solids in the metal ion solutions at ambient temperature without extra reducing or capping agent. Some MOFs undergo structural transformations with retention of the single crystallinity via shrinkage, rotation, swing, or/and bending motions of the molecular components in response to the external stimuli. A MOF even changes coordination geometry of metal ions reversibly in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal manner on removal and rebinding of the coordinating solvent molecules. The materials can be applied in the development of devices and sensors.
